WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Beauty in Equality

With the goal of continuously helping the students to understand the importance of embracing diversity and equality, as well as to understand the significance of the International Women’s month, the faculty and staff of the French American School of Miami spearheaded several activities to highlight this important occasion.

Specifically, students in the third grade participated in several classroom activities to express their understanding of the relevance of this celebration and in their own ways, express their appreciation of women in their lives.

The class watched a video presentation about impactful women and their contribution to history and in many different fields. Throughout the post viewing discussions, the students shared who among all the women featured in the video they admired the most. They also shared what inspired them about that specific woman. The American aviation pioneer, Amelia Earhart became the favorite among the class.

Women’s history month is not just about women who left a mark in history or those who made breakthroughs in science, health, politics, and other fields. It is also about ordinary women who are mothers, sisters, aunts, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and others who are contributing daily, in one way or another, to make this world a better place. Students expressed this idea through posters and slogans. Using their creativity, they drew images of women in their lives, their mothers, friends, or teachers that they consider as their personal hero.

The class also came up with a slogan for this year’s celebration: “When women’s voices are heard, a strong nation is created!” With these words, the students were able to show how they value the contribution of women throughout history in building a strong nation. The class also discussed, through this slogan, that after many years of the suppression of their right to vote, as well as to be educated and to speak up in different periods of history, women deserve to be heard and recognized.

International Women’s month is an annual celebration which formally began by the year 1987. It happens once a year, but it is important to continuously remind our students of its relevance and how important it is to keep on honoring the strong and powerful women in their lives every day. This celebration is also a good way to teach them that equality, acceptance, and respect are not just a once-a-year thing but must be an everyday ideal. That way, we can always say that there is beauty in equality!
