LITERATURE AND SCIENCE

The students of PreK4 at the North Campus began their study of My Valley and Ma vallée by Claude Ponti. The book is part of the annual Albertine Prize contest. During circle time, Isabelle and Theodore read the story back-to-back, page-by-page, so the students could hear it in both French and English. The most important parts were done bilingually. The students were in awe of the illustrations that depicted various landscapes and landforms in the fictitious world of the Twims (the little creature featured on the cover).

Afterwards, to prepare them for the rest of the unit where they will be able to build and describe various landforms, students sorted flashcards into two categories: landforms and NOT landforms. They worked collaboratively to determine what “landform” means, and they accurately sorted the cards. They will continue to learn the landforms they can find around the world in both English and French over the next few weeks. Don’t be surprised if they ask you to take them to an island, volcano or mountain - they’re just practicing their vocabulary.
